That is the biggest challenge in cooking hot dogs, especially when you cook them on a grill.

The high temperature on the grill can easily burn the skin of the hot dogs and leave the interior raw if you do not carefully cook them. 

That is why you need to make sure that you always attend to the hot dogs when you cook them on a grill.

Gas grills can produce more consistent heat than on stoves, so it makes the job a whole lot easier. 

However, that does not mean that you can cook hot dogs at any temperature.

You still need to make sure that you get the right temperature and timer to cook the hot dogs all the way through.

Cooking Hot Dogs On A Gas Grill

While it is easy to cook hot dogs on stoves and on a grill, there are some specific things that you need to follow to make the best results. Follow this recipe to cook your hot dogs the best way possible.

 

Ingredients

  • 4 Hot Dogs
  • 4 Hot Dog Buns
  • 1 cup of melted butter
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil or a non-stick grill spray
  • Ketchup and mustard or your favorite hot dog sauce

 

Step 1: Prepare The Hot Dogs

The best way to make sure that the hot dogs cook properly is to thaw them completely before cooking even if you do it on the grill or on stoves.

Hot dogs are usually frozen, so make sure they defrost before cooking.

 Bring out the hot dogs, place them in a bowl with the natural casing still on, and then let them defrost by allowing cold water to drip over them.

You can also leave them in the refrigerator overnight. 

This will make sure that the hot dogs cook all the way through.

Get your buns and then cut them in the middle with a knife leaving 1/3 of the thickness to hold the bun together.

 

Step 2: Prepare The Grill

Use your grill brush to clean the grill grates and make sure that you remove any food residual on them.

Use your vegetable oil and then put it on the grill grates using a pair of tongs and a paper towel.

Bring out your melted butter and then put a thin butter coating on the cut you made on the buns, get it on each side.

After 10 minutes of preheating the grill, the heat distributes evenly throughout the cooking surface.

So turn the temperature down to medium heat or 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you are using regular hot dogs, you can turn the heat to 350 degrees Fahrenheit as they have higher fat content than beef hot dogs, which cooks at a lower temperature.

Place the hot dogs on the gas grill and let them cook for at least 5 minutes.

If you place the hot dogs in an area with indirect heat, you can allow them to cook for up to 10 minutes.

2 to 3 minutes before the hot dogs are fully cooked, place the buttered buns on the grill.

Let the buns toast for a minute and then remove them immediately after 1 minute to prevent them from drying out.

Once the hot dogs are done, place each hot dog on a bun and then top it with either caramelized onions, other toppings you want, or just leave the hot dogs and buns as they are.

How Long Do You Grill Hot Dogs On A Gas Grill?

The time you need to get hot dogs done on a gas grill like Weber depends on two things, the temperature of the grill and the thickness of the hot dogs. You will need to cook longer at lower temperatures. 

If you have regular hot dogs, you will need to cook them somewhere between 5 and 7 minutes.

Larger hot dogs would need to be cooked for up to 10 minutes to get the heat in the middle of the hot dogs. 

You will need to make sure that you cook them at the right temperature to make sure that the hot dogs are cooked all the way through and are not burnt on the outer skin.

 

What Temperature Do You Cook Hot Dogs On A Gas Grill?

So I do recommend closing the lid of the grill when cooking hot dogs. Letting the lid open or close depends on where you are most comfortable with as it differs to people on whether the lid is open or closed.

the difference between the lid open or closed is the length of cooking time and how even the cook will be. So observe your grill and see where it performs better.
