This guide will help you get the best finish on your strip steak, which is important to me, considering how expensive these are.

I always wanted to cook New York Strip steak and now, since I have, I can share the recipe here.

New York strip steak is so good that you can make this recipe and taste as it came from a good steakhouse.

New York Strip Steak is perhaps one if not the best cuts of meat to cook on a grill.

If the cut of meat has enough marbling, then you will be able to enjoy a melt-in-your-mouth tenderness on the steak.

The one I got from Snake River Farms is perfect for it. Hence I recommend them as I loved the quality of New York Strip Steak from them.

HOW TO COOK NEW YORK STRIP STEAK ON A GRILL

The problem is that it is not that easy to make the meat tender and stay juicy.

That is especially true if you use direct heat from the grill as it can easily burn the crust of the steak.

So you need to be careful and cook the steak at the right temperature and timer to make sure that it cooks all the way through while also making sure that it stays tender and juicy.

The New York strip steak is not the softest cut of meat. It is a great choice since it gives off a meaty flavor, so once you cook it properly, you will have one of the best steak meals at home.

Grilled New York Strip Steak

Ingredients

  • 2 New York Strip Steaks
  • Kosher salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • 4 tablespoons of softened salted butter
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh thyme leaves

Step 1: Prepare And Season The Steaks

There is not much fat in these cuts of meat so make sure that you defrost them properly by leaving them in the refrigerator overnight.

Rinse them with cold water and pat dry with paper towels.

30 minutes before grilling, bring out your kosher salt and ground black pepper and season both sides of the steaks.

Allow the seasoning to get into the meat and get the meat to room temperature.

Step 2: Preheat The Grill

While waiting for the steak to come up to room temperature and absorb the seasoning, prepare the grill by loading it with fuel.

I prefer doing this recipe on a wood or charcoal grill.

Set the temperature to high or around 500 degrees Fahrenheit and then preheat it with the grill lid closed.

Allow the grill to preheat for 15 minutes to distribute the heat evenly and kill the contaminants in it.

Step 3: Prepare The Compound Butter

The compound butter will help the steaks get a nice crispy crust and that juicy texture inside.

Combine the salted butter, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme in a bowl.

Use one tablespoon of the mixture on your serving platter.

Make sure that you do this before grilling the steaks to create a nice and smooth platter once the steaks cook.

Step 4: Grill The Steaks

Since you are using high temperatures for cooking the steaks, this process will not take long.

Place the New York strip steaks on the grill and then let them grill with the lid closed.

After two to three minutes, turn the steaks around at 45 degrees to create a diagonal pattern on the crust.

Flip the steaks over and then cook them just like how you did with the first side.

Insert a meat probe into the thickest part of the steaks to see the preferred doneness of the meat.

For medium-rare, you can remove the steaks once the meat probe reaches 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

The best way to do this is to remove the steaks from the grill once they hit an internal temperature of 145 degrees for medium doneness with a nice pink middle and crunchy crust.

Step 5: Let Them Rest

Once you are satisfied with the doneness on the steaks, remove them from the grill and then place them on the platter.

Let the steaks rest for at least 10 minutes before slicing or cutting them.

This will bring back the juices into the meat and make the steaks tender.

Allowing the steaks to rest will also cook them further so let them rest and serve them while hot.

How Long Do You Grill A New York Strip Steak?

If you wonder how long to grill a new york strip steak then it depends on your preference. You can cook a 1-inch steak for about 4-6 minutes on one side to make new york strip steak tender.

If you use a high temperature to cook it, it might take longer to cook at lower heat.

When it comes to the doneness of the meat, you need to cook the strip steak for 3 to five minutes to get medium-rare doneness on the meat.

You achieve medium doneness when you cook the steaks for 6 minutes on each side for one-inch-thick steak depending on the thickness of the steak.

If the steak is thicker then you can cook for another minute extra but otherwise, it is mostly the same time as it is for a one-inch thick new york strip steak.

As you can see, you need to cook the strip steak a bit longer than other steaks cuts.

The reason behind this is that the New York strip steak is a little tougher than most cuts.

How Long Do You Grill A 1-inch Strip Steak?

A 1-inch thick strip steak might not seem like it is too thick, but for a tough cut of meat, you need to grill it for longer periods of time to allow the heat to seep through the meat.

Usually, I cook mine for at least 10 minutes as with that amount of time, I like the slightly medium-rare finish.

So basically I cook it for 5 minutes on each side.

This takes some practice though, as the timer is not the most reliable indicator.

So if you want to make sure that the steak is cooked to the doneness that you want, invest in a good meat probe to measure the internal temperature of the steaks.

How Many Times Do You Flip A Steak On The Grill?

Do not flip the steak more than once.

If you flip the steak more than once, that means that the grill has something wrong in it or you did not properly prepare it so it does not have the finish you want.

See, you only touch the steak three times, once when you put it on the grill, the second time is when you flip the steak, and the third and last time is when you get it out of the grill when done with cooking.

Flipping the steak frequently will disrupt the cooking process as you let the heat get out of the meat.

That means that it will take more time for the steak to cook if you flip it too often.

Is New York Strip Good For Grilling?

New York strip steak is considered one of the best cuts of meat to be grilled. So, Yes, New York strip steak is good for grilling.

Not only does it have a meaty flavor, but it is also one of the best-marbled cuts of steak making it flavourful and taste delicious when cooked.

In turn, this gives the meat a tender texture and a juicy finish that comes from the melted fats.

Although it is sometimes tough, you can solve that by grilling it properly, such as in the recipe above.

What Temperature Should I Grill New York Strip Steak?

If we are talking about the grill’s temperature, you need a hot surface to cook the steaks on.

Remember, New York strip steak is a tough cut of meat that needs to cook quickly.

That is why using high temperatures up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit will give it a good sear, all the while allowing the heat to get inside the middle of the steak to cook it properly.

If it is about the internal temperature, you need to cook the steak until the middle part has an internal temperature of at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure that it is safe from contaminants.

You can then cook it further at higher temperatures depending on the doneness of the steaks. I recommend not to go over 155 degrees Fahrenheit as the steak will be too dry.

What Temperature Do You Grill A 1-Inch Steak?

The same goes with 1-inch strip steaks when it comes to the temperature you need to use to cook it properly. However, you need to make sure that you cook it longer.

1-inch strip steaks can get up to 177 degrees Fahrenheit when it comes to the internal temperature, which means that the interior is cooked but not dried out.

Since the steak is thicker, it is only natural to allow it to reach a higher internal temperature so that the interior cooks and all the bacteria inside are killed.
