Good Chop vs. Butcher Box- Don’t buy BEFORE Reading this!

Not long ago, I started trying out online meat delivery services, and both Butcher Box and Good Chop caught my attention because of the great reviews and their meat options.

That is when I decided to try both of them to see how Butcher Box compares to Good Chop. while both are great options, some differences are worth noting.

I love cooking meat, and since my friends and I have a barbecue almost every weekend, I decided that getting good quality meat on a monthly subscription might be better.

Good Chop website

Both companies are convenient as I just wait for the meat to be delivered to my door so I have more time to prepare and spend with my family.

When I first started, I thought it would be easy to decide which meat delivery I would stick to, but they both have benefits that are hard to determine.

ButcherBox Website

I now have a definitive answer on whether I should stick with Butcher Box or Good Chop, but it took me months to decide. So let’s see how I got to that decision in this post, so you do not have to spend months as I did.

Butcher Box Vs. Good Chop

1. Meat Quality And Sourcing

One of the main reasons why I love both of these companies is because they care for the quality of their meat, your health, as well as the welfare of the animals.

It is great that you know where the meat is sourced so you are confident to buy from a seller that makes sure the meat you receive comes with the best quality possible.

Butcher Box

The cattle are fed with pure grass diet their entire life and are also pasture-raised. The animals get to roam freely so they do not get stressed.

This creates high-quality cuts of meat that are well-marbled. I tried the steaks from Butcher Box and they were all juicy and tender with flavors that are robust to mild.

The animals are never given hormones or antibiotics in their life so you can be sure that the beef you get from Butcher Box is all-natural.

Butcher Box also sells pork that is sourced from pigs that are raised without crates and gestation.

Chickens from Butcher Box come from farms that raise them free-range.

This is noticeable in the quality of meat they produce. The juicy and flavorful cuts of meat are perfect for your next dinner.

When it comes to seafood, Butcher Box makes sure that they only sell wild-caught seafood. They are sustainable so while you get high-quality seafood, you are also not endangering any animal.

Good Chop

Beef cuts from Good Chop are assured of having been born and raised in America. They source from local farms and independent ranchers with responsibly raised cattle.

The cattle are grass-fed in the first stages of their lives and are then finished with a vegetarian diet consisting of grains and roughage.

The chicken option from Good Chop are never caged or confined and they have access to local freshwater. This creates juicy cuts that I really love grilling.

I love seafood, especially when it comes from the wild. Good Chop has both wild-caught and farm-raised seafood options.

While I love the consistency I get from the farm-raised seafood, I also like the stronger umami on the wild-caught seafood so you get the option to choose which you prefer.

2. Types Of Meat Available

There is a lot to choose from both Butcher Box and Good Chop so you might get confused. So I have listed the meat options you can get from both companies so you can choose easily.

Good Chop

1. Beef

With the beef option, you can choose between the best-sellers such as the boneless ribeye steaks, top sirloin steaks, grass-fed filet mignon, New York strip steaks, and ground beef.

There are also more unique options like tri-tip, stew beef, porterhouse steaks, flank steaks, T-bone steaks, and sirloin tips.

2. Pork

The juicy and tender pork options from Good Chop include bone-in pork ribeyes, pork loin roast, thick-cut, uncured bacon, boneless pork chops, boneless pork butt, and more.

I love all those options but I also like ordering the delicious Italian sausages that are mild in spiciness and the pork chorizo sausages.

3. Chicken/Poultry

I usually order the organic drumsticks from Good Chop which is also what other customers like and it is obvious with the limited quantity.

If you do not get your drumsticks, there are also options like chicken breasts, organic boneless thighs, organic wings, skinless chicken breasts, and more.

4. Seafood

Sea scallops, Pacific cod, Alaskan halibut, and the unique rockfish are your options if you want to get seafood from Good Chop.

They are all quality and a great value for money option. I love cooking them for small meals like just a simple dinner with my family and the kids absolutely love them.

Butcher Box

  1. Beef

You can choose from New York strip steaks, steak tips, filet mignon, and burgers from the beef options of Butcher Box.

They are either Choice or Prime grade so they have the right marbling for a juicy and tender finish as well as a robust flavor that you will surely enjoy.

2. Pork

The more popular choices for the pork option are boneless pork chops, pork tenderloin, St, Louis pork ribs, and bacon.

Other options include pork butt, breakfast sausages, pork loin roast, and the amazing baby back ribs with great marbling and deep flavors.

3. Chicken

My favorite chicken order from Butcher Box is chicken tenders. They are extremely juicy, and you have the freedom to season them with any flavor that you want.

You can also order drumsticks, wings, chicken thighs, chicken breasts, or a whole chicken for roasting during special occasions.

4. Seafood

Butcher Box takes the win when it comes to seafood between these two. I love ordering seafood from them such as sockeye salmon and scallops.

They are full of flavor and I prefer the more accentuated taste of the wild-caught fish. Good Chop has more seafood options but I prefer the flavors of the wild-caught Butcher Box seafood.

5. Others

One advantage of Butcher Box over Good Chop is that they have options like boneless leg of lamb, turkey, and even bison.

If you want a non-traditional cut of meat and you want to discover other cuts of meat aside from beef, pork, and chicken, I recommend trying out the lamb and bison options.

The bison options are robust in flavor but pretty tough, so they are best cooked with a slow and low cooking method or roasting.

3. Pricing

Good Chop has a less expensive option than Butcher Box, but you have more options when you are a member of Butcher Box.

You get almost the same meat from Good Chop for $20 less than when you order the same amount from Butcher Box.

For instance, the medium box from Good Chop is only $149, and you can select up to 6 cuts of meat you want.

Butcher Box offers 6 cuts of meat that cost $169, so you get more value if you choose the medium box from Good Chop.

However, Butcher Box also offers other subscription boxes if you do not need that much meat or if you need more than what you would usually get.

4. Subscription Options Between The Two

Good Chop Subscriptions

There are two subscription options from Good Chop – the medium box and the large box. Both have great deals, but if you cook more meat, you get more value from the large box.

1. Medium Box Subscription From Good Chop – $149 a month

This subscription box is good for a small family or if you are to feed up to 4 people. You can choose from up to 36 portions, roughly $4.14 per meal.

You can select up to 6 cuts for the box. This subscription is the perfect option if you do not cook meat that often or if you do not need to cook for a large group of people.

2.Large Box Subscription From Good Chop – $169 a month

This subscription box is for you if you have a large freezer and can store more meat. With the Large Box, Good Chop lets you choose from 12 cuts of meat that you want.

When it comes to value, you will get more from the Large Box subscription. You can have up to 72 portions or roughly $3.74 a meal.

I love ordering this option when I have a planned barbecue in my backyard. You can feed up to 8 people with the Large Box from Good Chop.

Will I Have To Commit To The Subscription From Good Chop?

No, you do not have to commit to the monthly subscription. You can cancel any time you want or change the delivery date of your chosen box.

This has allowed me to schedule the delivery properly when I have something planned ahead. It is a really convenient way to get the cuts of meat that I want at the exact date that I want them.

Butcher Box Subscriptions

There are more options from Butcher Box than from Good Chop. Here are your options if you want a more flexible meat delivery option.

1. Custom Box – $169 a month

With the custom box option, you can create the perfect box of meat that you want. You get to select from more than 25 cuts of high-quality meat.

The custom box weighs 9 to 14 pounds of meat and only costs $169 a month. You can cancel any time, but you do not have the option to reschedule the delivery.

One thing I liked about the custom box subscription is that you get to choose or update the content of the custom box every month before the delivery date comes.

With the custom box, you get up to 20% more meat than the other curated boxes from Butcher Box.

2. Mixed Box – $146 a month

With up to 8-11 pounds of meat, the mixed box subscription from Butcher Box allows you to select from 100% grass-fed beef, organic chicken, and pork in one box.

This is a family-friendly option where you get to cook more versatile recipes and it costs only $146 a month.

An excellent example of what you can get from the Mixed Box subscription is 2 pounds of ground beef, 2 NY strip steaks, 4 top sirloin steaks, 1 pound of whole pork tenderloin, and 3 pounds of chicken breasts.

3. Beef And Chicken Box – $146 a month

The Beef and Chicken box subscription from Butcher Box is pretty much the same as the Mixed Box subscription. You get up to 8-11 pounds of meat a month.

The only difference is that you only get to select from the beef and chicken options only. This could be great if you do not need any pork cuts and want more chicken or beef cuts.

For instance, I have a lot of butcher shops around me that I already trust, and they sell a lot of pork cuts, so this box is perfect for my preference as I only want high-quality beef and chicken cuts.

4. Beef And Pork Box – $146 a month

Like the Mixed Box and Beef And Chicken Box, the Beef And Pork Box has 8-11 pounds of meat at the same price.

You can select any cut from the 100% grass-fed beef cuts and the pork options from the crate-free raised hogs.

5. All Beef Box – $146 a month

As the name suggests, the All Beef Box allows you to choose any cut from the 100% grass-fed beef cuts from Butcher Box and costs only $146 a month.

You can get 2 pounds of ground beef, 2 NY strip steaks, 1 pound of premium steak tips, 2 pounds of chuck roast, and 4 top sirloin steaks in just one box.

6. Basic Box – $99 a month

If you want a cheaper option, you can subscribe to the Basic Box option from Butcher Box. With this box, you can choose from any of the cuts of meat you want.

Select any cut from 100% grass-fed beef, crate-free pork, or organic chicken meat. It is only $99 a month but you will only get 7 to 7.5 pounds of meat.

Note: All subscription boxes from Butcher Box are shipped FREE and you can cancel any time you want.

The only disadvantage is that there is a limited supply, so specific cuts like New York strip steaks, flat iron steaks, boneless pork chops, and others might not be available depending on the region.

5. Packaging And Delivery

Butcher Box

With test labs involved in making the best packaging, Butcher Box ensures that the meat arrives in perfect condition and reduces as much carbon footprint as possible.

Butcher Box offers a zip code tool to determine whether the area you are in means that the boxes will need dry ice, and if so, how much so they can reduce waste.

The packaging of Butcher Box is great. It is well-insulated, and the meat can stay frozen for up to 6-8 hours in case you do not get to pick it up as soon as it is delivered.

I also love how Butcher Box notifies me through e-mail when my subscription box has arrived so I can either contact someone to pick it up and place it in the freezer or go and do it myself.

If you are at work, you can be confident that the meat will stay frozen for up to 8 hours once you are notified that the box has been delivered so you can still get to it after working hours.

All of the subscription boxes from Butcher Box are delivered free of charge. The package can be recycled, and I used it for grocery shopping for frozen goods.

Another thing I liked about Butcher Box is that I can change the frequency of the delivery from 4 weeks, 6 weeks, and even 2 months.

You cannot specify the day of the week the meat will be delivered, so it is good to plan.

Good Chop

You only have a 4-week delivery frequency when you order boxes from Good Chop. The packaging is also recyclable and well-insulated, so the meat stays frozen for hours.

Before each cutoff period, you can cancel your subscription boxes or change the delivery date so it is convenient for you when you have something planned.

The package is sealed, and the meat is frozen with dry ice, so the meat inside the box will stay frozen and safe if you cannot get to the box immediately.

The package itself is also made from plant-based materials and paper.

Good Chop guarantees that the meat you ordered will be delivered to your doorstep in perfect condition, if not, you can get account credits or a 100% money-back guarantee.

This made me confident to order from them, and they do live up to their promise.

Crowd Cow Vs. Butcher Box

Other meat delivery services like Crowd Cow have advantages over Butcher Box and Good Chop.

One of the main differences between Crowd Cow and Butcher Box is that Crowd Cow offers a la carte orders where you do not need to subscribe to order your meat.

Butcher Box has 6 subscription boxes, while Crowd Cow has a subscription box that allows you to order anything you want from the huge selection of meat.

Both companies are great alternatives if you do not have the time to go out and shop for meat. They sell high-quality cuts that you will surely enjoy.

The main advantage of Crowd Cow is that it offers Japanese and American wagyu beef, a high-quality meat cut.

You also have more options if you choose Crowd Cow. Crowd Cow provides much information about meat cuts without the website being too overwhelming.

Crowd Cow does not work with industrial factory farms, so you can also be sure that the cuts of meat you order are sourced from farms that raised the animals under humane conditions.

I prefer Crowd Cow over Butcher Box when since I have more options on Crowd Cow, but Butcher Box is a great alternative for it.

Customer Service

Butcher Box was more responsive than Good Chop regarding customer service. Most of my questions were answered directly with the FAQs that can be accessed through the chat option.

Once you are on Butcher Box’s website, you will see a “Help?” button at the bottom right of your screen. There, you can see FAQs that might relate to your questions.

If not, you can specify your question in the chat box, and there will be related questions that answer your question.

They also offer email service if you have more specific questions that the FAQs cannot answer on the chat, and the company is responsive in answering my questions within minutes.

Good Chop also offers good customer service with properly categorized FAQs. It is a little harder to specify questions on the chatbox.

That is why I find it better to contact them through email or phone. Their Live Chat option is available from Monday to Friday between 7 am to 9 pm EST.

While both companies answered specific questions with the exact answers I needed, I still prefer Butcher Box because of their responsiveness and for answering most questions on the chatbox alone.

What Do Other Customers Think Of Butcher Box Vs Good Chop?

Butcher Box

Most customers are satisfied with what Butcher Box can offer, with reviews ranging from the great quality of meat to exceptional customer service.

I agree with them as I have not had trouble with anything when it comes to ordering from Butcher Box.

“I have used Butcher box since 2018 and have had a wonderful experience. The 2 or 3 issues were handled with replacements ASAP. Great quality and customer service. I would highly recommend to anyone who wants quality meat delivered to your door. I have a carnivore way of eating and all I eat is meat. Very satisfied with this service. THANK YOU Butcher Box…”
– Roxanne Lambert

There are, however, some bad reviews that mention the bad packaging. Some customers have received boxes that are not insulated so their cuts of meat were not frozen.

“Out of 5 orders, the last three have come completely thawed, no ice and no insulation. They gave me a hard time every time. When they did replace the boxes, they all came the same way!” – DMONICUS

“When the meat arrives frozen, it’s fine. But too many times meat arrives thawed.”- Sarah Hopkins

Overall, Butcher Box has great reviews; most complaints are about the packaging, and they have been able to address that.

Good Chop

Good Chop has great customer reviews; all of them agree they have high-quality meats that the customers have enjoyed for years.

I have not been able to experience anything wrong with Good Chop besides the minor damage on the box when I first ordered, which was not that severe.

Some say that the company’s customer service and overall quality are great but are most impressed with the quality of the meat they received.

“We were impressed by the overall experience, but even more so by the quality of the meat – definitely spot on!” -Victo D., from the official website of Good Chop.

Some also noticed what I loved from Good Chop: how different the meat quality is compared to grocery store cuts sold anywhere.

“Serious step-up from what our supermarket sells. We found the sirloin and ribeye steaks especially good!” – Alex D. from the official website of Good Chop

Other customers have bad reviews saying some of the meat was expired and had bad packaging which caused them to become unsafe for eating.

“When I received it, two of the six items had issues the steak pack had a rip and the packaging, and the baby back ribs had an expiration date from 3 months prior.”- Armando Battain

What About Refunds Or Exchanges?

Butcher Box

You can get refunds and credits if unsatisfied with Butcher Box’s service. They offer full or partial refunds, credits on your next box, or replacement of products.

They do not accept returns since they are selling perishable products, so make sure you put the right address for your orders.

Refunds are granted if the box contains damaged contents unrelated to the courier, late and improper delivery, and missing items.

Good Chop

By contacting Customer Care of Good Chop, you can place your complaints about the products that you have received.

Like Butcher Box, Good Chop offers a full or partial refund of damaged goods, account credits, and a return or picture of damaged meat.

So yes, both are great for customer satisfaction, and you have options on their refund and return policies.

Does Butcher Box Or Good Chop Have A Better Company Reputation?

Good Chop has a better company reputation than Butcher Box, with over 89% of the customer reviews being positive.

They have great service and have an A-plus rating on Better Business Bureau. Butcher Box is great, and they have many satisfied customers, but Good Chop has a better reputation.

Final Verdict

So which of the two should you choose? Butcher Box or Good Chop? I prefer Butcher Box mainly because they have more subscription options.

They both sell high-quality cuts of meat but have more options on Butcher Box. They have free-range organic chicken and unique cuts like a lamb, turkey, and bison.

I am an experimental person, so trying out cuts of meat other than beef, pork, and chicken is a huge plus for me, and Butcher Box provides that.

Good Chop has cheap subscription boxes and great cuts of meat, but then again, Butcher Box also offers great quality meat.

The flexible choices on Butcher Box are great for any event, so I can make plans for certain occasions where I want the perfect steaks, burgers, and other recipes!
