Beef Tri-tip Recipe On A Traeger Grill
Cooking your food at home is perfect for having a fun meal of your choice.
This beef tri-tip recipe on a Traeger grill will get you to cook the best lean meat meal for the family.
Traeger has grills that have helped other people make the best foods they can.
There are many ways and recipes that you can cook in a Traeger grill.
That means that although they are famous for barbecue or burgers, Traeger grills do not have an issue with cooking your steaks and other thicker cuts of meat if you want a proper meal.
The beef tri-tip is one of the best cuts from a cow as it is a very lean cut.
That means that it is also very healthy as it does not have as much fat as the other cuts of meat or steaks you get.
However, because of the lean texture of this cut, it can be tricky to cook as it dries out quickly.
It will only take a few minutes, and this cut of meat will become a dry slab that is hardly palatable.
So here, we will be teaching you how to cook your beef tri-tip without much hassle.
This ensures that the cut of meat will not become dry and stray juicy and tender when cooked.
What You Will Need
If you plan to cook for the family, you will need to get at least 2 to 3 beef tri-tips.
They are relatively smaller than other cuts of meat, so make sure that you get enough for the family.
You can also grind this cut of meat and make the best burgers with it.
There is not much fat on this cut, so you will need something to keep it moist while cooking inside the grill.
One way to do that is to make the best seasoning that can help in keeping the meat tasty while it is cooking.
You do not need any complicated ingredients for making the seasonings.
All you need to get is sea salt, onion powder, brown sugar, ground black pepper, and garlic powder.
You can also just get the Traeger original ‘Que BBQ Sauce to keep the meat moist.
If you do not want to go with all the hassle of buying the said ingredients, you can buy the ready-made marinade from Traeger.
Although I admit, making your marinade is pretty fun.
This is for the marinade, and then you will need the rub to make the meat softer.
Traeger also sells their rub, and I recommend using the Traeger Prime Rib Rub for this recipe.
Aside from the mentioned ingredients, you do not need much for this recipe.
Just prepare the Traeger grill and prepare the other ingredients for making the best tri-rip recipe.
Get your tongs and other grilling tools and equipment ready and start cooking.
Follow the instructions below on how to make the best beef tri-tip on your Traeger grill.
Beef Tri-tip Recipe
Step 1: Plan Ahead
Prepare the marinade from the night before you are planning to cook your beef tri-tip.
Mix all the ingredients in a bowl or just place the beef tri-tip on a flat pan and pour the marinade.
The Traeger ‘Que BBQ sauce will get you the best results for putting all the flavors you need onto the meat.
Make sure to do this ahead of time to get the flavors into the meat.
For this specific recipe, the marinade needs to be applied to the meat at least overnight.
So do this the night before cooking so you can get all the marinade flavors into the beef tri-tips.
This is important since the beef tri-tip is mostly lean.
Letting the marinade sit for a few minutes will not do the job as the flavors will not seep into the thick and lean structure of the meat.
Step 2: The Day Of Cooking
Take the beef tri-tips out of the fridge 45 minutes before cooking.
Place it on a platter with the fat side up if you have bought a non-trimmed cut until there are no remaining fats.
Score the fats so you can le the flavors into it. Do this by lightly cutting the fat with a knife, turn the beef tri-tip 90 degrees and then score again to create something like a net pattern.
From there, remove the beef tri-tip from the marinade and pat it dry with paper towels.
You can discard the marinade and not use it for another set of meat as it will have a bad taste.
Lightly season the beef tri-tip with the Traeger Prime Rib Rub and get it all over the meat.
Use your hands to evenly spread the rub on the meat; you do not need the rub to be too thick.
Step 3: Preheat The Traeger Grill
Load up the Traeger grill’s pellet hopper with fruity wood pellets.
I found it best to put these types of pellets as they add a pleasant flavor to the meat, so get ones like cherry or apple pellet.
Fill up the pellet hopper as this cooking process will take longer than you expected.
Preheat the Traeger grill and set the temperature to 180 degrees Fahrenheit and close the lid.
Wait for at least 15 minutes before you cook the beef tri-tips.
Keep the lid closed so you can enhance the smoke later on when cooking the meat and create an evenly heated dome.
Step 4: Cook The Beef Tri-Tip
Place the beef tri-tips directly on the grill grates and let it smoke with the lid closed.
If your Traeger grill has a Super Smoke feature, you can turn it on to get the best results.
At 180 degrees Fahrenheit, you will need to smoke the beef tri-tips for at least 3 to 4 hours.
That is because the tri-tip is a lean cut of meat, so you need time to make it more tender and juicy.
After 3 or 4 hours, remove the beef tri-tip from the grill and then place it on an aluminum foil.
Pour one-half cup of beef broth into the aluminum foil and close it; use more aluminum foil if needed.
Reset the temperature of the Traeger grill and increase it to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Make sure that the pellet hopper still has enough pellets for cooking for another 40 to 60 minutes.
Place the aluminum foil with the beef tri-tip back on the grill and then let it cook for another 45 minutes.
Place your meat probe into the thickest part of the meat and let it cook again.
Once the temperature reads 130 tp 140 degrees Fahrenheit, remove the beef tri-tip from the grill.
Let it rest for at least 15 minutes to keep the juices inside the meat before cutting it up.
Slice the beef tri-tip into thin slices and then serve with a delicious sauce or some salad on the side!
Conclusion
There are many ways to cook your beef tri-tip but nothing as easy and as convenient as doing it on a Traeger grill. That is especially true if you have a Super Smoke feature on your grill.
Just make sure that you put enough effort into preparing the ingredients and seasonings you need so that the beef tri-tip does not dry out when you cook it in the Traeger grill.
Follow the recipe above and customize the rub or the marinade to your liking.
Make sure to follow the instructions and the specifications on the recipe to perfect soft and juicy tri-tip!
