Cooking Hot Dogs On A Blackstone Griddle Recipe
We have referred to the guide from Blackstone’s website and made it more understandable in this post.
That way, you will be able to follow it and cook the right way while you read through it.
Ingredients
- 4 Hot Dogs
- 4 Hot Dog Buns
- 1 large onion
- Salt and Pepper to season
- Ketchup and Mustard or your favorite hot dog sauce
- 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
Step 1: Prepare The Ingredients
You first need to make sure that all the ingredients you prepare before even heat the griddle.
Start with the buns and cut a line in the middle of each bun.
You can use a knife to make the perfect slice on each bun.
Cut each bun 2/3 of the way to fit the hot dog in it and the onions and the sauce that you will be using in them.
Score the hot dogs with a sharp knife to ensure that the heat gets into the hot dogs.
This is optional so you can leave the hot dogs to thaw and cook them without even scoring them.
Slice the Onion thin to cook it quickly as well.
You can also use other ingredients to go with your hot dogs but onions will bring a slightly sweet flavor to the hot dogs.
Step 2: Prepare The Blackstone Griddle
Start by cleaning the Blackstone griddle and season it if not used for a long time.
Get a separate set of oil and then bring the heat to the max until the cooking surface starts to smoke.
Preheat the Blackstone griddle once it is ready by setting the temperature to medium heat or around 300 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Close the lid as you prepare the ingredients.
Step 3: Cook The Hot Dogs
Once the griddle reaches around 350 degrees Fahrenheit, get the hot dogs and then drizzle the cooking surface with the vegetable oil and spread it with the spatula.
Place the onions first on the griddle and season them with salt and pepper.
Let them cook for 5 to 7 minutes with occasional stirring to do not burn on one side.
You are aiming for a translucent color of the onions so once they start to caramelize and get that sort of glassy color, remove them from the griddle and then place them on a plate with a paper towel over it.
At the same oil and cooking temperature, place the hot dogs next and cook them for 5-10 minutes.
You do not need to close the griddle lid as you will need to frequently turn the hot dogs.
While cooking the hot dogs, place the buns on the side to toast them a little bit.
This is optional but I would recommend doing it to add some more textures to the finished product.
Just aim for a golden brown color on the slices you made in the buns by pressing them lightly on the griddle with the spatula. Once cooked, let the hot dogs rest for about 2 minutes.
Step 4: Build The Hot Dogs
Once everything is ready, get one bun and then place one hot dog on the slice.
Top it with the caramelized onions and then place as much or as little sauce as you want over them.
Do the same with the rest of the buns, hot dogs, and onions.
Plate them properly and then serve the hot dogs while they are still hot.
How You can COOK THE BEST HOT DOGS ON BLACKSTONE GRIDDLE ?
The first thing you should remember when cooking hot dogs is to make sure that the heat is right.
You do not need too much heat as it will most likely burn the outer skin of the hot dogs.
When cooking on a griddle, you need to stay near it as the hot dogs will easily burn.
You might want to make sure that the outer parts do not get burned and cook all the way through.
You cannot achieve that if your hot dogs are also frozen or too cold.
It will only make them want to stick to the cooking surface with the interior staying cold and undercooked.
At lower temperatures, you will need to cook the hot dogs longer.
The goal is to make the skin of the hot dogs blister a little bit as it is a sign that the hot dogs are hot inside and well cooked.
Use a spatula to flip the hot dogs frequently to distribute the heat evenly throughout the hot dogs.
That way, the heat inside the hot dogs will be even and they cook perfectly.
Can You Season A Griddle With Bacon?
Bacon-wrapped hot dogs are great as you get that crispy coating on the hot dogs and that yummy fatty taste.
However, I did not do that recipe here so you can avoid seasoning the griddle with it.
You should not use bacon grease to season the griddle.
You can still cook the hot dogs wrapped in bacon but not season the griddle.
Blackstone goes against using bacon grease to season their griddles.
First, bacon grease does not have the same purity as the other oil types used to season a griddle.
This can cause uneven seasoning on the griddle that is hard to scrape off without scratching or scraping off some of the coatings on the cooking surface.
Bacon grease also smells bad when burnt and can affect the flavors on your food.
So make sure that you use other types of oil that produce a more neutral smell and flavor to season your griddle.
How Long Do You Cook Hot Dogs On A Griddle?
In general, you can cook hot dogs on a griddle for between 5 to 10 minutes.
That is to make sure that the heat reaches the middle of the hot dog to cook it through.
However, that depends on the temperature of the griddle that you cook the hot dogs on.
If you use high heat, make sure that the hot dogs completely thaw before cooking.
That way, you will not burn the skin of the hot dogs and leave the inside raw.
It is best to cook the hot dogs over middle heat to ensure that the heat gets in the middle of the hot dogs.
